First Impressions Count
If you were creating a print ad for your business, you would
purchase the largest ad that your budget could afford. Why? Larger
ads make a better impression and therefore have a greater impact on
potential customers.
So, if a larger ad makes a better impression, why not create the
largest pages you can for your website? If you create a page that
is wider than visitors can see on their computer screens,
very few of your potential customers will scroll
sideways to read your message, they will simply move on to one of
your competitors!
You could create an extremely impressive website designed for 1280
pixel wide screens, but according to the latest web statistics, you
will turn away about one customer in two. If you create a very
impressive website designed for 1024 pixel wide screens, you would
still lose one customer in eleven.
Businesses do not want to
sacrifice a single customer, which is why most websites are created
for 800 pixel wide screens. The sites are narrow, less impressive, and
float to the center of wider video displays; but just about every
customer can view them.
What if you could create an extremely impressive website for 50% of
your customers that would automatically transform itself into a very
impressive website for an additional 41% of your customers while
showing the remaining 9% of your customers the less impressive
website? Each customer will be presented with the most impressive
image of your company that their computer allows.
That is exactly what Variable HTML does for
you!
The basic concept of Variable HTML is nothing new. The ability to
create an alternate stylesheet that redesigns the pages of your
website for a printer has been available for over a decade.
If you were going to write a print media CSS file for this website,
you wouldn't print the book background or the navigation, and unless
you had a special contract with your advertisers, you could also
skip the ads. The CSS file would use {display: none;}
directives to eliminate all but the content material, company
banner, and copyright.
Variable HTML merely expands on that concept to allow you to design
alternate stylesheets based on the size of each visitor's browser
window.
Websites are a combination of the variable content that changes
from page to page and static content that remains the same on every
page. Creating pages that will display in multiple templates
naturally requires additional coding for the static content. The
maintenance of this additional coding could easily become a major
time drain. You will need a simple way to test static content
changes on one page then duplicate the final changes onto every
other page.
Our MySSI program is a Server Side Include emulator that
accomplishes this task for you and it is also available as a
freeware download. You will quickly learn that using MySSI makes
Variable HTML websites easier to maintain than standard
websites.
How much does the script cost?
Its Basically Freeware!
If you think the concept is interesting, you can download and use
the script free of charge for non-commercial sites. All we ask is
that you leave the copyright at the start of the script intact.
You are not allowed to redistribute the script yourself, but we do
encourage you to add our link to your site. Also, please send us
your URL and we will list it hear as an example of the script's
usage.
What about support?
We publish a support email address on this website. Due to all of
the spammers on the web today, that contact address will change
often, so always use the website link when you want to ask
questions.
What about commercial use?
Tell your potential customers about the advantages of Variable
HTML. Try it on their websites. If they are happy with the results
and you get paid for the site you develop, we ask that you send us a
$25 donation for each commercial site you develop. If you want to
redistribute the script as part of another package, contact us to
get our permission first.
